Two postal workers were fatally shot this Tuesday at a postal facility in East Lamar Carrier Annex in Memphis, while the third employee died from self-inflicted wounds. An FBI spokesperson confirmed that the third postal worker was responsible for the shooting.
This double murder and suicide is the third mass shooting in the wider Memphis area in just a few weeks.
Motives and Circumstances Are Not Clear Yet
The investigation is being conducted by the US Postal Inspectorate and the FBI. During the initial news briefing late Tuesday afternoon, the officials did not want to speculate on the attacker’s motives.
The shooting caused a lot of commotion in the community because it happened in the historic Orange Mound neighborhood, populated mainly by Afro-Americans. The streets were blocked for hours, and one white sedan was towed away.
This Is the Latest in Series of Shootings in the Area
Memphis is rightfully considered to be one of the most dangerous cities in the US. Just a few weeks ago, on September 23, a sushi counter owner killed one person and wounded 14 more.
And one week later, a teen boy was critically injured by gunfire inside of a Memphis school. The series started with the interstate shooting on September 19, when two people were shot by a man from the car behind them. It’s clear that danger lurks everywhere, and in such unforeseeable situations, having a good stun gun or a taser could help you protect yourself.
