With the new Omicron variant putting immense strain on the healthcare system and filling up hospitals, masks are once again in the spotlight. And although there is no possibility of shortages we were witnessing at the beginning of the pandemic, there are still growing concerns.
The largest mask manufacturer in the US has released a statement saying that they have tripled their production and that the market is well supplied. CDC, however, warns that not all N95 masks are suitable for children.
3M, a Leading Mask Producer, Says There Will Be No Shortages
3M spokeswoman Jennifer Ehrlich stated that the company has tripled its production capacity and now makes 100 million masks a month just in the US.
Amazon’s spokesperson has confirmed the company has an ample supply of different N95 masks and that the probability of shortages is extremely low.
N95 Masks Are Not Designed for Children, CDC Warns
N95 masks are designed for adult professionals and can leave significant gaps. In cases like this, the mask’s ability to filter 95% of airborne particles is not fully used. That’s why it is advised to try different masks from several producers. The dimensions, rigidity, and ear band strength vary slightly, and it is possible to find a mask that will fit.
Due to the high transmissibility of Omicron, the CDC is expected to update its mask guidance, an agency official stated on Tuesday. Depending on the new recommendations, we may need to update our Coronavirus survival kits.
