The quiet bedroom community of Waukesha, 20 miles away from Milwaukee, witnessed a horrible tragedy on Sunday afternoon when a red SUV went through barricades during an annual parade and started mowing down people.
The officials are still gathering the data, but there are five deaths and around 40 injured people reported so far. At least 15 of the injured are children.
It Seemed as if the Driver Was Targeting People, Eyewitnesses Say. Police Are Not Yet Sure About the Motives.
The police are investigating the reasons for the attack and a possible connection between a stabbing close to the street where the parade was passing by. They are trying to determine if the tragic incident was a stabber’s attempt to flee the scene or a targeted attack.
Chief Daniel Thompson of the Waukesha Police Department stated that a person of interest was in custody. He also confirmed that shots were fired by the police officers in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
The Hospitals in the Area Admitted Around 40 Injured People, 15 of Them Children
The injured people were taken to different hospitals in the area, so the officials are still gathering data. Children’s Wisconsin said that the hospital had admitted 15 patients. Aurora Medical Center–Summit reported treating 13 patients. The officials at Froedtert Hospital confirmed treating injuries but didn’t specify how many.
The tragic incident was captured by security cameras. It shook the peaceful community of Waukesha, which is considered to be one of the safest cities in America. The city officials said Main Street will remain closed until at least midday on Monday.
